Expected outcomes

The ANELIXI Project's outcomes contribute to improved water quality, habitat protection, and socioeconomic well-being in local communities. Both WWTPs will produce high-quality outflows through the use of new technology, despite the increased supply of incoming wastewater. As a result, the good ecological status of their water recipients and the environment will be preserved. The anticipated reduction in energy consumption will also contribute to environmental protection. The possibility of reusing reclaimed water for irrigation will contribute to the rational management of water resources and the reduction of overexploitation in water-scarce areas. By increasing the efficiency of the WWTPs, more people can be served and seasonal tourist and other population needs can be met, resulting in economic growth and social benefits.

Outputs

The expected outputs of the ANELIXI project are the followings:

1. Implementation of microsieves and filters in 2 WWTPs (Marpissa, Kyperounda) of the 2 countries (Greece, Cyprus) and optimization of their operation.

2. Immediate increase of the capacity of 2 the WWTPs (taking advantage of the existing infrastructure).

3. Improvement of the efficiency of the 2 WWTPs  (BOD5, COD, TN, TP, etc.), qualitative upgrading of effluents.

4. Reduction of energy requirements of  the 2 WWTPs, reduction of the energy footprint.

5. Reduction of total greenhouse gas emissions of the 2 WWTPs.

6. Reduction of operating costs of the 2 WWTPs.

7. Possibility of extending the sewerage network (connection of several pipelines), without the need of the two WWTPs to be contractually extended.

8. Biosolids recycling (sludges) for the production of fertilizer and biogas. LINK TO OBJECTIVES: O1, O2, O5, O7.
9. Development of a special and innovative "decision-making" software for WWTPs that need to be upgraded. LINK TO OBJECTIVES: O8, O9.

11. Environmental Impact Studies (EIA) of the 2 WWTPs (updated with the implementation of new technologies).
